What is an Expandable Garden Hose?
Expandable Hose as the name suggest is new type of garden hose that expands 3 times its original length when water pressure is on, and contracts to its original length when its off. This flexibility allows expandable hose to be self draining, non kinking, non twisting and non tangling garden hose. So in nutshell expandable garden hose.
Types of Garden Hoses
Flexible Water Hose
The most common type of gardening hose, these can be made of either rubber or vinyl. Depending on how they are made and with what material can determine if they would suit your needs.
Exapandable Garden Hose
These hoses are very lightweight and can expand up to three times their length when filled up with water. This hose are Lightweight, great for hand watering, great if not much room to store a garden hose.
Garden Soaker Hose
A garden soaker hose is used typically for garden irrigation. Once the water is turned on the water can seep out into the surrounding soil through thousand of tiny holes.
These are less common, but can be very useful in certain situations. They operate like a sprinkler, but are longer, allowing for more coverage at one time. These typically have a double row of small holes down the center, and when you attach the coupling to the faucet and turn it on, the water gently arches out to each side. Sprinklers are a good choice for newly planted grass, and for narrow, lengthy garden spaces.
Expandable garden hose Length
The length of your choice expandable garden hose matters a lot to what you intend to use it for and where you want to use it. Typically, if you have a large yard or garden space you might want to go for longer hoses, as compared to when you only want a hose to clean your dog or car, or just want to use it for a small garden space. Consider your need for an expandable garden hose and use it to determine how long your hose should be.
It determines the amount of waterflow from the hose. A garden hose of 1/2 inch width will suffice for all your household garden or lawn uses, whereas for commercial lands or heavy-duty watering tasks, pick the hose with larger diameter of 3/4 inches.
One of the major reasons why you would take a shift from regular water hoses to expandable garden hoses is to ensure a higher level of durability. This is because regular garden hoses are subject to wear and tear when they are dragged across lawns and thorny areas. On the other hand, the best expandable garden hoses are more durable than their regular hose counterparts.
Advantage of owning this type of hose is its ability to automatically, drain all the water content in it after you turn the faucet off. This often saves on time and energy that you would have used emptying it.
Some are made from recycled or partly recycled materials. The material you choose will in large part determine how long it will last. A cheap vinyl or rubber product will be lightweight, but it won’t hold up to heavy usage or the elements as well as a more expensive, heavier rubber model.
- Stainless Steel (wrapped over another material)
- Polyvinyl Chloride (aka PVC or vinyl)
- Extruded Synthetic Rubber
When using the hose first time, ensure to fill the hose with water with the shut off valve off and allow the hose to stretch and expand. Once it has expanded, release the water and repeat the above process once more before started using it. As mentioned above the life span of an expandable hose is dependent on three factors. Quality of materials used, adherence to user instructions and the quality of technology used in the manufacturing and testing.
